Prescott was built on what was then the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad.

The town is located in the southeast corner of Linn County.

Prescott was named in honor of C. H.Prescott, auditor and treasurer of the Missouri River, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad, which passed through the town.

The town site was laid out in 1870. In April of that year the first store was opened. It was followed by a drug store and a blacksmith shop, and in June the post office was established.

The first school was taught in 1873, a large school house was erected in 1873. The former high school building was recently restored and now houses the city's library. The elementary school, on the west edge of Prescott, is now used as City Hall.
