Both of the major parties have notified the Kansas Secretary of State’s office of their rules for voting in the primary this year. The rules are the same as in 2004 and 2006.

The Republican Party rules call for a closed primary, so only registered voters affiliated with the Republican Party and unaffiliated voters who affiliate with the Republican Party may receive the Republican ballot.

The Democratic Party rules call for a semi-open primary. Registered voters who are affiliated with the Democratic Party and unaffiliated voters may receive the Democratic ballot. Unaffiliated voters are not required to affiliate with the party to vote in the Democratic primary. They may choose to do so, but they may also choose to vote in the Democratic primary without affiliating.
